THE STORY BEHIND TCPH

2019-02-06_0001.jpg

Hey! I’m Courtney.

Originally from Ann Arbor, I now call Traverse City home.  I live in a beautifully wooded area, dotted with lakes, and I couldn’t be happier that this is where I’ve landed.

I have an art degree and an environmental science minor from the University of Michigan and it seems that those two areas have always been a dominant influence in my life and career path.  As a photographer I am inspired by the natural world, specifically the land, water, and wildlife of Northern Michigan. Over the years I have used my photography in new ways to explore handmade image transfers, art prints, products, and most recently apparel.

I began showing my work at art shows throughout Michigan in 2013 and the brand has grown slowly but surely from there. I’m constantly working to improve the sustainability of my pieces whether it’s using reclaimed wood, water based inks, or recycled plastic-free shipping materials.  Considering my materials and environmental impact will always be an important part of my business.

WHY NORTHERN MICHIGAN?

Because this is where most of my favorite memories have been made.

Where my most lasting friendships have solidified. Where my family comes to connect.

This is where I sit around a morning fire making camp coffee with like-minded outdoorswomen who are all sharing big smiles and no makeup.

This is where a Fall bike ride through the woods with my husband has become my favorite date.

This is where my 60+ year old mother hops off of her windsurf board with her bleach blonde and grey hair looking wild.

This is where I melt into the slightly tacky cushions of the pontoon boat next to my dad so that we can watch the sun sink down and clink our tumblers of bourbon together.

Because, for me,

THE COMPASS HAS ALWAYS POINTED HERE.
