I had never been to Dow Gardens before this session - and wow what a gem! Brittany and Hunter asked me to come to the gardens because it was where Hunter proposed and in the town where they will begin their married life together. On top of the beautiful grounds and gorgeous light, these two are the sweetest. This entire session literally felt like a “walk in the park” ;) Carefree, enjoying the warmer weather, the greenery, taking a break from work and study groups and a recent move to enjoy just being together. Cheers to Brittany & Hunter, I can’t wait for the wedding!
We were on the lookout for rain - it was supposed to be cloudy all day and the showers kept moving all over the place on the weather apps. Instead, we ended up with some of the best golden light I’ve seen on a wedding day in quite a long time. It was spectacular. Not only that, but the cherry and apple orchards were in bloom. Starry Night Barn is just one of those places where it doesn’t matter which direction you turn, the views are all gorgeous. But let’s set all of that aside. Forget that for a moment, you’ll see it soon enough in these photos. The friendships, the emotions, Lindsey & Brad’s relationship. The jokes about cats and plants and road rage. The tears, the hugs, the high fives. The commitment. That’s why everyone came together on June 1st. And it just so happened to be an absolutely gorgeous day.

It’s no secret that a backyard wedding is one of my favorite venues. There are a million reasons why it’s not always possible or practical, but there is just something so personal about opening up a family home to all of your wedding guests. Karin’s parents were able to do just that and it was really special. After the wedding ceremony at Karin & Nate’s church, everyone returned to the family home where they personally greeted every guest as they entered the door. This little gesture felt very symbolic of their new life as a married couple and the close knit group enjoyed an awesome celebration throughout the afternoon and evening with beautiful lake views. The weather came through for us with some awesome golden light. The party had bbq, garden inspired centerpieces, cupcakes, donuts, belly laughs, tears, and lots of joy. Cheers to Karin & Nate!

Imagine an intimate wedding in Italy. A winery tucked among the hills and fields. A day so warm the bride has to dip her feet in the water. An uncomplicated ceremony. Friends and family laughing, eating delicious small bites, drinking wine. Dozens of adorable babies giggling and toddlers running around playing. Tables simply set with lace runners, candles and red roses. Tiramisu for dessert. Golden light hitting the grape vines.
That was Chelsea and Scott's wedding. Minus one small detail: the location. Surprise, surprise we weren't in Italy last weekend, but the vibe was on point. Cheers you two! What a day!
There is nothing quite like getting married in a place so personal that all of your family heights have been recorded on the inside of the doorframe. Childhood portraits line the walls. Your sister was married in the backyard years earlier and today you see your niece and nephew running around on that same lawn. Now you're marrying the love of your life there - telling jokes in your vows, cutting a cake that your mother-in-law made with painstaking care, eating tacos from your favorite restaurant, having a great friend DJ. For Maurella that fairytale came true on Saturday. Teddy and Maurella wrote the most personal vows and danced the night away under the stars. It was truly a pleasure and we were privileged to be a part of it. I hope you were taking those mental snapshots all day, but I sincerely hope these photos help you remember even more.

We hit a perfect Fall day for Zack, Laura & their two pups. The golden light was just right and the session kinda flew by because we kept finding new places to explore. It was one of those times where I'd just pull over on the side of the road and say "I just had to stop - that field looks like a perfect spot right now". To top it all off we witnessed a cotton candy sunset at Pyramid Point... doesn't get much better!
Engagement sessions with me are kind of evolving into hikes or walks - exploring new spaces and lighting. Adventuring with couples for a couple hours. Taking time to wander and taking in this f-ing magical Northern Michigan landscape. Reflecting on it now, it really is a great fit for our brand. I'm looking for people who are open to this; Morgan and Nathan were perfect. We laughed, we hiked up dunes, explored the woods looking for glowy strands of light. Their wedding in August is going to be a beauty - I can't wait.
I'll say this over and over again - I highly encourage extended families to invite a photographer to document them on vacation for a few hours. I'm so happy that the Goldsmith family invited me to do just that. It took a lot of clapping and silly faces from Grandma to get little Shay to smile, but I think the pictures of her sweet toothy grin made it totally worth it :) Thanks for having me you guys, it was truly a pleasure!
Whitney and Ian = total babes. These high school sweethearts tied the knot last Saturday and what an amazing day it was. Brengman Brothers was such a great setting and we may or may not have gotten carried away photographing the absolutely adorable flower girls & ringbearers ;) This job takes us to some amazing places, to work with some amazing people - I am definitely feeling grateful this morning. Cheers!
Emily & Matt are absolutely the sweetest, and what an amazing day they had last Saturday! It was such a relaxed day. Seriously, it was so laid back - they were both so excited to finally get married, but they were completely calm the entire time. Their vows didn't leave a dry eye in the crowd, the summery light was gorgeous, and the dance floor was packed through the end of the night. I'm so happy we were a part of it. Cheers to E + M!!
Spring is in the air, or at least it is in Ann Arbor! Lauren and Joe fell in love while at U of M's law school, so it is only fair that we spent some time in the law quad for their session. While we were there, we witnessed one of the craziest things that I have ever seen happen during an engagement session. A peregrine falcon swooped down out of a tree and dove into a bush after a squirrel. After several attempts, and a couple passes through the law quad, it flew off with empty talons. We stood there shocked for an excessive amount of time before taking photos again (in some super gorgeous golden light). Life is full of amazing surprises. I'm thankful I get to witness some of them with awesome clients. Happy Sunday folks!
WOW! Our team truly felt welcomed this weekend. From the moment we arrived in St. Joe's on Friday until we left Sunday morning, we were able to spend time with a fantastic group at an amazing home right on Lake Michigan. After all of the planning and effort, one single day seems to fly by so fast. I know Kerry and Nick would have loved to live in this day for a while longer, but they both wrote vows that incorporated truly being present in the moment. In this way, I know they were able to savor every last minute of September 12th, 2015.

I met up with Michael and Lauren for their engagement session in the village of Norwood - just south of Charlevoix. Norwood is where Lauren grew up and her parents and grandparents still live there. While waiting for the sun to set a bit more before heading to the beach, we actually stopped at her grandparents' amazing and historic home. The house was built in the 1860's and when I showed interest, her grandmother was more than happy to take me on a little home and garden tour - seriously my job is the best, and it is definitely never boring. I love old homes and I love photographing people in places that have such great nostalgia and sentimental value. Michael and Lauren are seriously sweethearts - it was truly a pleasure to take these shots! And, for the first time, I have a grandmother making an appearance in an engagement session blog post. Love. Love. Love.
Oh Northern Michigan... Sometimes you are just so perfect. Mackinac Island truly embodies this, with its beautiful summer golden light, long days, pastel colored water and sky, white stone beaches, cedars and pines. The historic charm brings back all of the nostalgia of taking childhood trips there. So obviously I was pretty excited to meet Julia and Matthew on the island for their engagement session. Thankfully Michael was able to join me to help with our bikes and gear, so it was truly a team effort and a super fun day. We lucked out with some ridiculously beautiful light and embraced all of the good summer vibes!
We are so excited to share this teaser video clip with you! Not much beats a great couple dancing romantically outdoors in golden evening light. Congratulations Nicole and Jason!
