2018 WEDDING DETAIL HIGHLIGHTS // REAL WEDDINGS FROM MICHIGAN AND THE MIDWEST

Whether it’s a platter filled with delicious grilled sausages, or your custom designed wedding bands, there will be little details that help tell the story of your wedding day. They give us a sense of place. They bring us back to the specific time of year, to the specific location. They help round out how it felt to be there.

In 20 years some of these small aspects of your day might fade in your memory, but the photos keep them alive. You chose amazing vendors to work with. You picked stationary, and flowers, and linens, and desserts that captured your taste at this time in your life. Or maybe you didn’t do any of those things. Maybe you picked up a sheet cake and got married at City Hall. I don’t care how large or small your wedding is, or how much money and time you spent on decor. There are still detail photos to be captured no matter what. That’s why I try to pay attention to them. Here are some that really stood out to me this year.

We worked with an unbelievable number of talented people this year. I hope I’m not missing anyone!

CHELSEA & SCOTT // AN INTIMATE WINERY WEDDING AT AURORA CELLARS // LEELANAU WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Imagine an intimate wedding in Italy.  A winery tucked among the hills and fields.  A day so warm the bride has to dip her feet in the water.  An uncomplicated ceremony.  Friends and family laughing, eating delicious small bites, drinking wine.  Dozens of adorable babies giggling and toddlers running around playing.  Tables simply set with lace runners, candles and red roses.  Tiramisu for dessert.  Golden light hitting the grape vines.

That was Chelsea and Scott's wedding.  Minus one small detail: the location.  Surprise, surprise we weren't in Italy last weekend, but the vibe was on point.  Cheers you two!  What a day!

Venue: Aurora Cellars // Hair & Makeup: Brittany, Elegant Bridal Designs // Florist: Omena Cut Flowers // Transportation: Grand Traverse Tours // Catering & Dessert: Folgarelli's // Thanks Cathy Fitz for the photo assistance!

ANNA & JAMES // A WEDDING ON THE FARM IN TRAVERSE CITY

I think true magic in life happens when you stop worrying about what everyone else is doing, what is 'trendy', what you think you should do instead of what actually makes you feel as if you are being true to yourself.  This is not always easy, but I've found this to be true in creative pursuits and I've certainly found it to be true over the past few years documenting weddings.  In my opinion, the most important thing to ask yourself when planning your wedding is whether your choices truly reflect who you are as a couple.  Here are two people who TOTALLY understand that.  Hats off to Anna & James for throwing a down home and completely kick ass wedding celebration!

Venue: Gallagher's Farm Market, Hair & Makeup: Salon 415, Florist: Hooper Farm Gardens, Rentals: TC Party Rentals, Caterer: Cordwood BBQ, Cake: Aunt Carol Ebright, Band: The Living Daylites, Jon Timm & Will Thomas, Bride's attire: BHLDN, Groom's attire: Banana Republic & MrBow Dandy bowtie

KENDALL & JIM // EMPIRE MICHIGAN WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

My oh my.  What a day in Northern Michigan.  Kendall and Jim were married on a bright, sunny day in Empire.  Their laughter was contagious, they shot confetti canons during their entrance to the reception, the toasts were that perfect blend of emotional and funny, and Jim had the sweetest first dance with his mom - literally with her barefeet standing on his shoes.  Cheers to Kendall & Jim!  And I'll leave you with this quote from the back of their dinner menu:

"It's a great place to laze around and swim and fish when you want to.  And the best place in the world to do nothing.  It is beautiful country... and nobody knows about it but us." -Ernest Hemingway

Planning & Coordination: Sincerely, Ginger Weddings & Events, Hair & Makeup: Pavlova Salon & Spa, Florist: BLOOM, Tent & Rentals: American Rentals, Transportation: Blue Lakes By The Bay, Caterer: The Cook's House, Cake: Aunt B's Cakes & Desserts, Cake Topper: CFWeddings, DJ: Mr. Music, Bride's attire: Bridal Boutique of Naperville & BHLDN, Groom's attire: Nicholas Joseph, Videography: The Compass Points Here - coming soon!  Photo and Video help from these fantastic folks: Hallie Kohler & Sawyer Harris.

EMILY & ANDY // TRAVERSE CITY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY // THE CATHEDRAL BARN

I love this reading from Emily & Andy's ceremony, so instead of writing my typical little blurb here, I'll leave you with this.

UNION  By Robert Fulgham

You have known each other from the first glance of acquaintance to this point of commitment.  At some point, you decided to marry.  From that moment of yes, to this moment of yes, indeed, you have been making promises and agreements in an informal way.  All those conversations that were held riding in a car or over a meal or during long walks - all those sentences that began with "When we're married" and continued with "I will" and "you will" and "we will" - those late night talks that included "someday" and "somehow" and "maybe" - and all those promises that are unspoken matters of the heart.  All these common things, and more, are the real process of a wedding.  The symbolic vows that you are about to make are a way of saying to one another, "you know all those things we've promised and hoped and dreamed - well, I meant it all, every word."  Look at one another and remember this moment in time.  Before this moment you have been many things to one another - acquaintance, friend, companion, lover, dancing partner, and even teacher, for you have learned much from one another in these last few years.  Now you shall say a few words that take you across a threshold of life, and things will never quite be the same between you.  For after these vows, you shall say to the world, this is my husband, this is my wife.
