With the leaves just starting to change, and the air cooling down, I hiked around the grounds of the commons, walked down Front Street, and went to the beach with Katie & Matt. It truly felt just like hanging out with friends. The next day Katie sent me a sweet email message saying that exact thing, and how grateful they were. It makes me so happy - I mean it really, truly, fills me with gratitude - that my clients can have an experience like that with me. I'm so unbelievably excited for their wedding next September!!
These two are getting married in Northern Michigan next year, but live in Chicago, so we took advantage of our travel schedule to explore some of their favorite local spots! We began the session at The Oyster Bah, one of their favorite places to grab drinks and - of course - oysters. I absolutely loved this, because it's a meaningful location for them and gave us such a unique setting for photos! Cheers to Megan & Evan - can't wait for next year!!
When we lived in Northern California a few years ago, Tennessee Valley was my happy place. I'd come here to hike, run, and take photos. Fast forward to a few months ago when I happened to meet clients who are currently living in California, but are getting married in Traverse City next year! And on top of that, everything aligned just right so that I could take their engagement photos last week during a trip that Mike and I had planned to visit his brother and family! While we may not have hit glowy CA sun, the fog rolled in beautifully, the hills were green, the ocean was moody, and Jacquelyn & Doug have a contagious energy together. I can't tell you how excited I am to share a peek of this session and I'm even more excited about their upcoming wedding (btw, they seriously have a dream team of fellow vendors)!!!
Engagement sessions with me are kind of evolving into hikes or walks - exploring new spaces and lighting. Adventuring with couples for a couple hours. Taking time to wander and taking in this f-ing magical Northern Michigan landscape. Reflecting on it now, it really is a great fit for our brand. I'm looking for people who are open to this; Morgan and Nathan were perfect. We laughed, we hiked up dunes, explored the woods looking for glowy strands of light. Their wedding in August is going to be a beauty - I can't wait.
We have had some ridiculously unusual weather here in Northern Michigan. 50+ degrees in February is bonkers. But a definite upside to all of this sunshine is the glowing light and bright snow during engagement sessions! Kathy and Simon wanted an outdoorsy session that would include their pups - love it. I had a blast and we can't wait for their Winter wedding next year!

I think photos of Kristy and Matt together would be bright and happy no matter what the weather, but last week we really lucked out with a warm sunny day... and in case you didn't notice... it's November. Not typically a notorious month for sunshine in Michigan. I'm so filled with happiness for these two and can't wait to photograph their wedding next year! Thanks for making my job so fun you guys :)
Emily and Andy recently moved back to Traverse City - yay! - a place where Emily's family has farmed and grown fruit for generations. With such close ties to the land up here, they chose to take their engagement photos on Emily's grandmother's property. We hit an absolutely amazing fall evening filled with color. It was just perfect. Cheers to these two, I'm looking forward to 2017!
Fall has really been delivering some TRULY BEAUTIFUL STUFF lately. Seriously. I had such a blast roaming around the Historic Barns Park with Maren and Drew last week. These two are just super, super, sweet and I'm so excited for them! Eeekk! They are getting married next year in beautiful Northern Michigan - I can't wait!
What a day. Seriously - a bright, warm, fall day with golden light, two smiling people, and phenomenal views all around? Hello, Northern Michigan. I love you. Stephanie and Jake were so much fun and we explored Glen Haven and Sleeping Bear Point trail for their engagement session. I have a feeling these kinds of days are quickly becoming more rare, so enjoy every minute!
I am so freakin' excited for these two. They are so fun to be around, and laughed during their entire session. Next summer they are getting married at Hannah's family cottage with a beautiful view overlooking Crystal Lake, and the reception will be under the exact same clear tent that Mike and I had at our own wedding a couple weeks ago! CANNOT WAIT!
Spring is in the air, or at least it is in Ann Arbor! Lauren and Joe fell in love while at U of M's law school, so it is only fair that we spent some time in the law quad for their session. While we were there, we witnessed one of the craziest things that I have ever seen happen during an engagement session. A peregrine falcon swooped down out of a tree and dove into a bush after a squirrel. After several attempts, and a couple passes through the law quad, it flew off with empty talons. We stood there shocked for an excessive amount of time before taking photos again (in some super gorgeous golden light). Life is full of amazing surprises. I'm thankful I get to witness some of them with awesome clients. Happy Sunday folks!
We have had a lot of gray days up here recently, but on Sunday the sun came out in full force for Paige and Mike's engagement session and it. was. amazing. I am serious - it was glorious. February sun on the Empire Bluff Trail is hard to beat. These two were fantastic and adventurous, slipping and sliding all over the trail on the way out to the dunes with me. I'm hoping that they will agree --> it was TOTALLY worth it. Cheers to winter sun!
Where to begin... Fritz and Shahar are the real deal folks. They became our friends long before they became our clients, so taking their engagement photos was almost TOO much fun. Seriously. I headed down to Fritz's parents' property in Big Rapids where their wedding will be next summer. We walked through the woods and the fields on an absolutely gloriously sunny fall day. Oh Michigan, we all make jokes about your weather, but sometimes you truly deliver.
We met Josh and Emily while Michael was still working with Josh at McLain's as a bike mechanic, so of course I was super happy to hear that they were engaged and wanted me to take engagement photos! They couldn't stop laughing (and sticking out tongues to make each other laugh) the entire time. So obviously it was the best kind of engagement session. Congratulations to these two happy & adorably-in-love people!
On a beyond hot day last weekend, Emily, Matt, and I ventured into The Arb in Ann Arbor for their engagement session. The hot and humid weather couldn't stop love and giggles. These two are just awesome - here's their preview!
I met up with Michael and Lauren for their engagement session in the village of Norwood - just south of Charlevoix. Norwood is where Lauren grew up and her parents and grandparents still live there. While waiting for the sun to set a bit more before heading to the beach, we actually stopped at her grandparents' amazing and historic home. The house was built in the 1860's and when I showed interest, her grandmother was more than happy to take me on a little home and garden tour - seriously my job is the best, and it is definitely never boring. I love old homes and I love photographing people in places that have such great nostalgia and sentimental value. Michael and Lauren are seriously sweethearts - it was truly a pleasure to take these shots! And, for the first time, I have a grandmother making an appearance in an engagement session blog post. Love. Love. Love.
The light, the fields, the trees, the beach, the pier, the water, the cute pup and the even cuter couple. Yup - All the elements came together magically for Alecia and Mike's engagement session. So happy to be working with these two! Congrats!

Life is short and I am so happy that I have the opportunity to photograph genuine people in one of the most beautiful places on earth. White and pink cherry blossoms, green grass, blue water - Traverse City is magical at this time of year.
The Spring vibes were awesome for Kerry and Nick's engagement session in St. Joe's. We explored some hidden trails and of course spent time on the beach where these two will be getting married in September!
